PRIMARY TEACHER VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Context of the position:

SOS Children’s Villages Rwanda is an independent, non-governmental social development organization. The Organization supports vulnerable children and young people in four locations of Kigali, Bymba, Kayonza, and Gikongoro. SOS Rwanda applies a one-program approach in its education and family strengthening, that supports a holistic approach in the interest of children. In this regard, SOS Children’s Villages Rwanda seeks to recruit an experienced and competent Primary teacher for its Primary School School located at Gisozi Gasabo District

Job summary:

The school teacher greatly contributes to the intellectual, spiritual, moral and physical development of the young children assigned to her/his class. S/he thereby plays a critical part in preparing them for future life and independence. In this task, creative teaching methods must be employed to stimulate the child’s natural desire to learn and grow.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Leads all activities within the assigned class
• Prepares lesson plans and outlines in accordance with the curriculum guidelines, requirements of the school and the appropriate regulatory authorities.
• Teaches lessons and facilitates or supervises a variety of non-academic activities which may include art, crafts, story-telling, sports, nature walks etc.
• Ensures all necessary preparations are made prior to each lesson.
• Arranges cultural activities to educate children in their culture
• Involves children in the operations and maintenance of the school, including cleaning classrooms, tending flowers beds etc in an educative framework.

2. Creates a stimulating learning environment
• Maintains a positive degree of discipline inside and outside the classroom in order to create a safe secure and appropriate environment for learning
• Promotes a warm, supportive, non-threatening ethos in which the child finds learning enjoyable and stimulating and in which respect and cooperation are emphasised

• Uses creative teaching methods to nurture the children’s interest in learning, e.g. use drama, story telling, and singing or art to enhance the learning experience.
• Creates a lively, stimulating atmosphere in the classroom, e.g. by decorating the walls with children’s arts and crafts or by establishing a ‘nature corner’
• Maintains the classroom in a neat and tidy condition in order to create an environment conducive to learning.

3. Ensures the educational development of each child
• Provides individual attention to each child, monitoring children’s educational progress and taking appropriate corrective action as necessary.
• Conducts academic support programmes such as remedial classes to meet the educational needs of each child.
• Develops and implements homework programmes which may include project work, extra reading or other assignments.
• Prepares progress reports for each child as required by the principal, detailing the child’s academic progress as well as overall development.

4. General
• Supervises extra-curricular activities such as organized sports, clubs etc
• Performs administrative or other extra duties as required by the principal, such as store keeping, producing the school magazine or organizing school events.
• Maintains all furniture and equipment within the classroom in good order.
• Behaves in an exemplary manner at all times acting as a role model for the children
• Keeps educational documents required by the school
• Performs other reasonable duties as may be required by the immediate supervisor

Required Profile:
• Must have (A1) in the Field of Education with three (3) years of relevant working experience or (A2) in the field of Education with five (5) years of relevent experience.
• Must be able to deliver content to the children in French and in English, any subject assigned to him/her in Lower Classes of Primary Section • Must be able to teach Kinyarwanda in lower classes (P1-P3).
