Emergency Response Program
In light of the COVID19 pandemic lockdown in Rwanda in March 2020 which only excluded emergency services and individuals providing essential services, SOS Children’s Villages Rwanda raised awareness on COVID 19 prevention and response and distributed food items to 1,053 vulnerable families enrolled into the community family strengthening programme in Nyamagabe, Gicumbi, Gasabo and Kayonza districts, reaching 6,734 children and youth living in those families.
The support consisted of a provision of 26.3 tons of maize flour; 13 tons of red beans; 1 ton of cooking salt; 2,106 litres of cooking oil and 527 parcels of soap worth RWF 27.6 million.
In addition, 60 youth enrolled into the SOS Children’s Villages Rwanda programmes in Kayonza and Nyamagabe districts were trained on large crowd management, ethics and discipline on how best to contribute to public order and educate people about health guidelines to prevent the spread of the COVID19 pandemic.
The 60 youths volunteered to engage with passengers, shoppers and vendors at public places such as market entrances, bus parks, and streets to educate and remind the population about health guidelines to prevent the spread of the COVID 19.
