Context of the position:
SOS Children’s Villages Rwanda is an independent, non-governmental social development organization. The Organization supports vulnerable children and young people in four locations of Kigali,Byumba, Kayonza, and Gikongoro. SOS Rwanda applies a one-program approach in its education and family strengthening, that supports a holistic approach in the interest of children. In this regard, SOS Children’s Villages Rwanda seeks to recruit one (1) experienced and competent Nursery teachers for its Nursery and Primary School located in Gikongoro District.
Job summary:
A nursery School Teacher is responsible for providing a nurturing and stimulating environment for young children to learn and grow. S/he plays an important role in the early development of children, fostering love for learning and supporting their social and emotional well-being. Have a passion for working with young children and possess the skills to create a positive and engaging learning environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement age-appropriate lesson plans and activities to support the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development of children.
• Create a safe and inclusive classroom environment that promotes exploration, creativity, and independence.
• Provide a variety of learning experiences, including play-based activities, group discussions, and individualized instruction, to cater to the diverse needs and learning styles of children.
• Foster positive relationships with children, parents, and colleagues to promote open communication and collaboration.
• Monitor and assess each child’s progress and development, maintaining accurate records and providing feedback to parents on a regular basis.
• Support children in developing essential skills, such as language and communication, problem-solving, fine and gross motor skills, and social interactions.
• Promote good behavior and discipline through positive reinforcement techniques and age-appropriate classroom rules and expectations.
• Encourage the development of independence and self-help skills, such as toileting, dressing, and eating.
• Plan and organize field trips, events, and special activities that enhance the curriculum and provide opportunities for hands-on learning experiences.
• Stay updated on current early childhood education practices and trends by attending professional development workshops, conferences, and continuing education courses.
Nursery School Teacher Required Skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with young children, parents, and colleagues.
• Strong organizational and time management skills to plan and implement daily routines and activities.
• Patience, empathy, and a nurturing attitude to create a supportive and caring environment for children.
• Creativity and resourcefulness in developing engaging and interactive learning materials and activities.
• Ability to adapt teaching strategies and techniques to meet the individual needs and interests of each child.
• Knowledge of child development theories and practices, including early literacy and numeracy, art, music, and physical education.
• Ability to handle and resolve conflicts or difficult situations in a calm and professional manner.
• Familiarity with technology and the ability to incorporate age-appropriate educational resources and tools into teaching practices.
• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a team, sharing ideas, resources, and best practices with colleagues.
• Strong observation and assessment skills to track children’s progress and identify areas for additional support or intervention.
Required Qualifications
• Advanced level certificate in Early Childhood Education or a related field
• Relevant teaching certification or license
• Two years of experience working with young children in a nursery school or early childhood education setting. Required Competencies
• Knowledge of child safety and emergency procedures
• Proficiency in English language and ability to effectively communicate with children and parents
• Understanding of and commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity in the classroom
• Familiarity with educational standards and frameworks, or Play-based learning approaches, is a plus
• Continuous professional development to stay updated on best practices in early childhood education.
• Effective communication skills for dealing with students, parents, teachers and support staff
• Should be organized, energetic and self-directed
• Ability to interact at all levels
• Strong intellect and vision
• Aligning Performance for Success
• Must have good knowledge of using a computer (Word and Excel)
• Fluent in both Kinyarwanda and English and good knowledge of written in both languages.
