SOS Children’s Villages Rwanda handed over start-up tool kits to 104 youth

SOS Children’s Villages in Rwanda in partnership with Kayonza District donated start-up tool kits to 104 youth who have acquired various vocational skills including in tailoring, welding, mechanics, carpentry, construction and hairdressing.

The start-up tool kits composed of construction kits, hairdressing, mechanics and carpentry materials worth Rwf 11,242,750, were handed over by Jean Bosco Kwizera, the National Director of SOS Children’s Villages in Rwanda.

The beneficiaries include youth from vulnerable families, e most of them are grouped in different cooperatives. While handing over the items, the National Director of SOS Children’s Villages in Rwanda Jean Bosco Kwizera encouraged the beneficiaries to work in cooperatives to share their ideas and practice.

“We have noticed that providing money was not yielding good results because some beneficiaries used the money improperly, especially because of lack of skills to design and implement good projects. Investing in knowledge is the most reliable and tested source of development even for individuals,” Kwizera said.
Jean Bosco stressed the importance of cooperatives in raising the living standards of youth and the country at large.

Jean Bosco asked the youth to discard laziness and instead engage in developmental projects for self-reliance. He added “Remember God has mercy to everybody but He helps those who help themselves, join hands together to create new jobs,” he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Claire Mukamugisha Claire a welding graduate from Gahini Sector, said the tools would help her to sustain her job.

“I am very happy because today my dream becomes true. These tool kits will help me set up my own welding workshop. I used to have had depression because I dropped out of school due to unwanted pregnancy. I felt isolated for three years but now I became a responsible woman,” she said.

Ntakirutimana graduated in carpentry and received a tool kit as well. In his testimony, he said that before joining TVET training, his family lived in extreme poverty but now he managed to find his family house.

“I would like to tell you that my family has a very nice living room while before we sat on the ground. “With such skills, I am optimistic that the future is bright. I will create my own jobs without running around for opportunities which are scarce nowadays,” he added.

Pascal Nkurunziza, the Executive Secretary of Nyamirama Sector thanked SOS Children’s Villages in Rwanda for the efforts to support vulnerable families.
Pascal said, “Our District needs more organization like SOS Children’s Villages Rwanda. Not all organizations decide to train youth, give them tool kits and at the same time encourage them to work in cooperatives. This is a great achievement for our youth who received the tool kits,”he explained.

SOS Children’s Villages offers tailored support to strengthen youth in need. From counselling to skills development, parents are also empowered with the resources they need to overcome their difficulties.
